If a chapter is particularly large, you can divide it by intertitles that bear no numbering and not appear in the TOC. This subtitle, you can highlight graphically, e.g. by italics.The advantage of such intermediate title is that its content is clear, despite the internal structure remains, but at the same time you reach a subdivision lengthy chapter.
Especially in academic essays intertitles are meaningful. Since there is usually no content articles directory, you can still use the intertitles introduce an internal structure.
